The opportunity
Transport Scotland recently awarded Amey the Northeast Trunk Road Network Management Contract. This 8-year contract begins in August 2022 and builds upon our current Southwest Trunk Road Network Management Contract. You will assist the design of some of the largest civil engineering and associated infrastructure projects in Scotland. With a cumulative value in-excess of £1bn these long-term contracts provide excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional design staff at all stages in their careers to be involved in some of the most exciting and challenging engineering projects.
In addition to these long-term contracts, we also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges and transportation and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and established Contractors across the country.
The role
Due to increased workload, we are seeking to recruit a Road Safety Manager who has a demonstrable record of the design and delivery of road safety improvement schemes. The successful candidate will be a Chartered Engineer, passionate about road safety and able to manage road safety and accident investigation and prevention related activities.
You will have detailed knowledge and experience of the Safe System Approach to Road Safety, have a proactive approach and capable of developing road safety initiatives nationally and in the local area.

As Road Safety Manager working within our Network Management Contracts, you will be accountable for successfully delivering a programme of projects to meet our national targets set out within Transport Scotland’s Road Safety Framework and Strategic Road Safety Plan.
In a typical week you will
Develop and maintain specific client relationship(s), with regular reviews of project performance, and active management of issues Lead and develop road safety investigations and develop technical reports and managing Road Safety Audits Problem solve and develop designs of bespoke road safety schemes and minor improvement projects Undertake effective communication with statutory partners, client team, elected officers and the public including public meetings, presentations, and workshops Champion and promote the Safe Systems approach across all operations including the core management team and key staff Develop and maintain control of the road safety budget and programme Agree and own budgetary targets for turnover and margin within the programme and report progress against these Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation, particularly CDM Supervise, mentor, and develop team members from Apprentice Engineers and Technicians to Senior Engineers Complete performance appraisals with direct reports and provide learning and development opportunities where possible.
We want to hear from you if you have
A background specialising in road safety investigation and design Chartered Engineer MICE, MIHE, MCIHT, MIStructE  or TPP Demonstrable experience of leading and delivering competent designs of road safety schemes, mass action plans, road markings and signage upgrades Extensive knowledge of DMRB, TSRGD, Cycling by Design, and Roads for All. Experienced Principal Designer with working knowledge of current CDM and H&S requirements  Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively deal with the ability to deal with complaints and finding a resolution
